RE: Billionaires versus Millionaires
Football would be flat out dumb to have a work stoppage but this time I'm in agreement with the owners about a rookie salary structure.
I'm not sure what the NHL was thinking with that overly aggressive expansion. It is my firm belief that teams in warmer climates will always be at a disadvantage.

The Broncos seem to be able to grow RBs but Henry is a very good one. If I am the Philadelphia Eagles, Arizona Cardinals or Detroit Lions I am giving Henry a call.

RE: Has MMA Killed Boxing?
I love boxing and always will. My dad had me boxing until I was 14years old at Sugar Ray Leonard's gym in Palmer Park, MD. I also boxed in the Army which was all kinds of fun. I think Boxing is a completely different sport from this new stuff and no comparisons can really be made. Boxing has died because of corruption and scandal within the management and promotion areas. I am sure the same thing is taking place with this new MMA stuff but because it is so new we are not hearing about it yet.

RE: Billionaires versus Millionaires
I think this issue is going to cause a civil war between the high draft choices and the veteran minimum players. Gene Upshaw has been able to convince the vets that having no rookie wage scale helps everyone when it only really helps those due for a big pay-day. Upshaw's argument is that the college kid's contract gives the veteran player leverage to ask for more money. The problem is every team is dealing with a limited pot of money so if that rookie gets a huge pot and has never played a down that leaves less for proven veterans. It is my hope (and the owners) that the veteran minimum players revolt and force Upshaw to concede to the Owner demand of rookie wage scales. I firmly believe that kid who just got drafted by Atlanta should not be making more money than Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.

RE: AN NFL Civil War is Looming
Both sides of this argument have valid points and that I why this is destined to be a civil war within the NFLPA. I agree that players should try to get all the money they can but the vets making minimum salaries want to see more money for veterans especially over rookies that never played a down.
My gut feeling is that since vets make up the majority of the NFLPA they are either going to force Upshaw to accept the owners proposal for a rookie salary structure or replace Upshaw and get someone who will make it happen. In the end the veteran players making minimum salary make up the bulk of the membership and they will win.

RE: China Blog: A lesson in Journalism
Before I became an independent media and training consultant I worked for CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN and BBC. I kept hearing stories about Fox news but it wasn't until I became a special project producer for CBS that I got to see just how unprofessional their network news operation is.
All TV Networks have bad anchors, reporters and producers, but Fox News seems to collect them. I really do not care about Fox blatant biases because other networks have biases of their own, but what I do find unacceptable is the lack of professionalism shown from top to bottom of this network. If I had a producer that was openly confrontational like that while inviting a guest to come on my show that producer would be out of a job in a nano-second.

RE: Brett Favre-Tile Dysfunction (BFD)
No one should ever retire after a heart wrenching loss because you are not seeing things clearly. The Packers organization did the right thing by moving on so now it is time for Favre to decide if he can stomach life elsewhere. If Favre were to show up in Chicago or Minnesota that would be the ultimate slap in the face to Packers fans wouldn't it?
The Cavalierman Posted At 1/31/2009 01:58 PM
RE: Brett Favre-Tile Dysfunction (BFD)
Brett Favre will just join the long list of athletes that left their long term teams in order to keep playing. I have no problem with him coming back but I think he needs to realize that the Packers have moved on. I consider Joe Montana the best QB ever despite what Brett has done and if Montana left SF then if Favre wants to play again he needs to consider life somewhere else.

RE: Brett Favre-Tile Dysfunction (BFD)
Favre would make the Vikings better but who are the Vikings WR's? I know Rice was coming around but who is left? Of course Having Adrian Peterson around does not hurt.

RE: Brett Favre-Tile Dysfunction (BFD)
If I were a Viking fan I would not place too much faith in Allen yet. Much like Pacman Jones in Dallas Allen has to prove himself trustworthy. We all know he is a terrific football player but if he slips up again and gets suspended for half the season then what good is he? The Vikings are a very talented football team on both sides of the football but Brett Favre would not solve all of their problems in my humble opinion.

RE: Welcome back to reality Patriots Nation
I can certainly see the Jets as front runners now but Buffalo is looking mighty strong as well. Buffalo's defense is better than the Jets right now but it is early.

RE: Season Over for Brady?
I'm not sure what the Patriots are thinking by not bringing in a veteran QB. I believe Belichek cheated and the Patriots dynasty is tainted. Now I will be looking to see if Belichek the so called genius can make something of this season or was he just riding Brady and cheated his way to 3 titles.

RE: Culpepper Calls-It-Quits

RE: My always controversial week #2 NFL Picks
That Detroit pick is a gut feeling that Rodgers is going to slump in his first start on the road. The Texans should beat the Ravens for the same reason. The Bucs face a rookie in Ryan so they should win to IMO.

RE: Benchings, backups, catastrophic injuries and a Cedric Benson sighting
I honestly believe Childress thought he would have Brett Favre as his QB right now and when that fell through he did not want to crush Jackson's confidence by bringing in another veteran. The bottom line here is the Vikings are an excellent football team and they need better play from the QB position. Gus Frerrotte is not a long term answer but he does give them a better chance to win.

RE: Roy Williams Trade Bait?
Dallas would be INSANE to trade Ware for Williams. Anthony Spencer might make sense but definitely not ware. As a Redskins fan I was hoping Williams might land in Washington but I don't think we need him with the rookies Devin Thomas and Malcom Kelly poised to play. I think a team like Philly should step up since they have no real posession WR. Dallas does not have enough footballs to make TO, Witten and Williams happy.

RE: Jaworski's analysis of the next Peyton Manning
I've watched Flacco and I think the kid is going to be really good as well. He has a rocket arm and the game is not overwhelming to him. If the Ravens can run the ball to protect him I think this kid will be very good.

RE: T.O. Spits Venom at Keyshawn Johnson
The Cowboys were exposed by both the Skins and the Eagles. The Cowboys defense is giving up way too many points and Romo is throwing at least one bad pick per game. The fact that Both TO and Pac-Man are starting to meltdown at the same time spells nothing but trouble for the Cowboys. My gut feeling says they struggle to make the playoffs despite their talent heavy roster.

RE: Cowboys deal for Williams and bury Pacman
Can anyone smell the desperation? The Cowboys were ordained superbowl champs in the preseason and that train derailed. Now "Jerruh" is throwing anything at the wall hoping something positive will stick. Roy Williams is a very good football player but the biggest problem in Dallas is the lack of a consistent RUNNING ATTACK. The easiest way to help Romo/Cowboys not choke in the playoffs is the pound the football on a consistent basis.
The problem with Jason Garrett is he wants to win throwing the ball but teams have figured him out. Until Garrett decides to put as much energy into his running game as the passing attack the Cowboys will continue to lose playoff games (if they make the playoffs).
The Cavalierman Posted At 1/31/2009 10:37 AM

RE: Five reasons to keep an eye on the Washington Capitals
I would not call Crosby the best to ever play yet and the Penguins team is not as young as the Caps. Crosby is definitely on a path to be great but throwing crowns at his feet 3 or 4 years into his career is a little premature to put it mildly.
Not to mention there is a huge Canadian bias for Crosby and Canadian players in general when the Russians are clearly producing the world's best hockey players.

This ended well for Redskin Nation. Jason Campbell represents the best chance for the Skins to win next season. Jay Cutler is going to do well in Chicago (if) they can land a quality WR.
When Campbell was placed in the same situation as Cutler he handled it like a pro and did not pout like Cutler. That was Campbell's test and I think he is going to have a big year.

RE: Why Cassel Is Worth The $63 million
One thing to keep in mind is the NFL QB is one of the most dependent positions in the league and way overhyped.
If Tom Brady did not have a great kicker and fantastic defense he would not have as many rings as he does. If Troy Aikman didn't have a terrific O-Line and Emmitt Smith he would have retired early from concussions.
QBs get too much credit when the team wins and all the blame when the team loses. All Cassel can do is his portion and the rest is up to the 52 other guys around him.
And for the record...no one player is worth 63 million in a team game.
Cavalierman Posted At 7/17/2009 06:59 PM
RE: Finally!
According to the information I've seen the Redskins are not interested in Vick. Due to the history of Dan Snyder the Redskins always come up when a big name player is available.
I think Vick could land in Dallas if Romo has another season ending meltdown. Jacksonville and St Louis needs butts in seats so they might be likely destinations for Vick.

Al Davis has always been a speed guy and DHB certainly has speed and size in bunches. For my money I would have taken Crabtree but I am very hesitant to call DHB a bust before he's played a game. Who knows....this guy could be a monster with a rocket armed QB like Damarcus Russell.

RE: Vikings desperation has many faces
As a Redskin fan I've never really paid much attention to Favre. I only look at the numbers which are impressive until you get to the TD-INT ratio. For all of Brett's gun slinging and his infectious enthusiasm he is no more than a 50-50 Qb that was blessed with extraordinary durability.
I grew up with Joe Gibbs who is still the only coach that used three different QBs to win superbowls so I'm not overly impressed by any QBs in a team sport. The one thing I will say for Favre is the Vikings present the best scenario for him to succeed. Based on what I've seen the Vikes will fall short of the overwhelming expectations. Brett's baggage will hurt the Vikings lockeroom especially if they start slow.
Cavalierman Posted At 8/18/2009 10:02 PM

The public relations hit on losing both Cutler and Marshall due to non-football related craziness is the likely culprit.

Lelie has proven that he is a 9 route WR only. If you send him over the middle game over. If you are comfortable taking up a roster spot for a guy that can only run one route effectively then this is a good signing.
The other burning question is does he still have the elite speed that got him into the league?

RE: Just a cog in the machine
Brady is very good, but reading defenses and calling audible is in every QB's job description. If the O-line does not adjust thier blocking assignments and the WRs don't adjust their routes then the QB will fail. Point here is as great as Brady might be he did his part among many other guys doing their part.

L.A. is the tempting apple in the garden but there is a reason two winning franchises left for what they perceived as greener pastures in St. Louis and back to Oakland. L.A. is fool's gold for the NFL as no team has made it work.
The minnesota ownership group does not strike me as the type that could pull it off. If they are going to go anywhere it better be Vegas where they have the money.

I have Mortal Kombat ranked high but I agree that it has a high cheese factor. Resident Evil is definitely not world class cinema but both the movies and the video game are world class in sales.

RE: Where does your team rank on Forbes 'List of Most Valuable NFL Teams'?
The Redskins and Patriots are actually #1 and #2 respectively in revenue. Jerruh Jones moved up to #1 with his new look at me stadium. The problem for Jerruh is with this economy those luxury suites he was counting on to generate revenue are going to go empty especially if the Cowboys are not winning.
That is also why Dan Snyder's achievement with the Redskins is remarkable. They have not won anything of note since 1991 but Snyder is raking in the revenue and the Skins have consecutive sellouts since 1962.

Ryan I expected Houston to come out and do what they did against the Jets, not the Titans. Apparently this team plays to the level of their opponents.
The Texans are incredibly unpredictable!

Huh?
Giving up on the guy you just paid a billion dollars. Not a good plan after two games unless he is completely combat ineffective.

RE: Is Mike Holmgren knocking on the Redskins door?
Barring a miracle turn around and deep playoff run Zorn is likely on borrowed time. Holmgren would be welcomed but the key to the success of any new Redskin coach would be Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato stepping back so Holmgren, Shanahan, Cowher or anyone else can fix what is broken.

Braylon Edwards better e careful what he wishes for. The New York media is going to beat him down if he takes the dropsies to New York.

The Giants have won the rude guest award (see the TSD weekly awards) more than any other team. They are gonna smoke the Raiders and it could be a lot uglier than 27-3.

From what I've seen/read Cable is going to jail. This is a year where I think we have a lot of movement at the trade deadline.

Cerrato is a Notre Dame guy so the idea of Brady Quinn as a Redskin is not out of the realm of possibility.

I was at the game and in between naps/drinking binges I glanced the score board. It was as ugly as the score would indicate. Congrats to the Chiefs!

RE: What happens when you lose to the Chiefs?
The Chiefs are clearly rebuilding while the Redskins (see themselves) as reloading even though the fact is they are just not that good. The Redskins need to blow it up starting with a new President of Football Operations and allow that person to reconstruct this proud franchise after Snyder and Cerrato gutted over the last 10 years.

RE: Weekly Awards and Pick Standings
Corey G asks a great question...Who had the best payback game?
In terms of scope I would say Joe Theismann. He was drafted by the Dolphins, opted for Canadian football instead. Miami went on to have the undefeated season while Joe languished in the CFL and in Washington. Had Joe played with the Dolphins he would have been the QB for the perfect season when the starter got hurt. In the ultimate Irony Theismann beats the Miami Dolphins in the Superbowl in 1982. It may not be the best payback game in terms of stats but the Superbowl is larger than any other football game in terms of scope. So Theismann's payback game was a pretty big deal.
I imagine many will say Brett Favre's game against the Pack a couple of weeks ago but Brett wants to beat the Pack in Green Bay. That will be a bigger deal to him.

College Basketball has the same issue but it's just not as prevalent as the NBA. In college ball it is often the smaller schools that must outplay the bigger schools and the biased refs in order to win.

Scuba Snyder actually learned something from firing Norv Turner before the end of the season. That created more problems than it solved. Snyder/Cerrato were hoping Zorn would quit after they took away his play calling duties but to Zorn's credit he manned up and stuck it out until the end.

I think the Campbell question is the biggest one in terms of how fast the Skins turn this around. I think Campbell gives them the best opportunity to win right away.

RE: Definitive news on Jason Campbell, Okung and other tidbits
I was thinking the exact same thing Scuba. I see many similarities in Campbell and Plummer with some notable exceptions. Campbell is not prone to throwing a ton of picks which drove Shanahan crazy. Campbell will not scramble as much as Plummer. That could be good or bad depending on the situation.
Double G - I'm hoping the Skins trade down because staying at 4 with so many holes makes zero sense to me.

If the Redskins are making a full transition to a 3-4 a guy like Vrabel brings a ton of institutional knowledge with him. For that reason alone I would not be surprised if the Skins make queries.

Scuba unfortunately there are a lot of Journalists that hate Tiger Woods for many reasons. A good portion of them hate him because he did not make himself accessible on their terms. RE: Americans spoil Canada's coming out party!
The Canadians pumped millions into their "Own the podium 2010" Olympic training program. Well they are gonna own the podium but that program said nothing about owning the medals given on said podium.
Many of my Canadian friends are pretty bummed out today. The other bummer from yesterday is the government closed private liquor stores so the Canadians not only had to sit through a stunning loss but they couldn't drown their sorrows in alcohol afterwards....double whammy!

RE: LaDainian Tomlinson Is Not Going To Kansas City
I could see LT in Indy if he can show people he is healthy. I think Houston cannot take the chance as they would be bringing in another oft-injured RB which was their biggest issue last year. The Giants might consider it but the Steelers don't pay their own RBs so I doubt they'd make a big splash to bring LT in. Parcells likes older RBs as they tend to make fewer mistakes which give Miami a chance.
I would add New England to this list.
Jim Turner Posted At 2/23/2010 11:47 AM
RE: Washington Redskins Pursuing Julius Peppers
The Redskins have Orakpo and Carter who can both play OLB and rack up sacks. Why would they pursue Peppers?
The only way that makes sense is if they have a suitor for Haynesworth which I doubt seriously given his level of fitness and high price tag. The Redskins offensive line is sad so if they are going to spend a bunch of money it will be for a left tackle or a guard.

RE: Jets Develop No Fly Zone, acquire Antonio Cromartie
Huge pickup for the Jets who now have the best CBs in the league without a doubt. Kinda makes me wonder why the Chargers would trade Cromartie to a team they may have to beat to get to the Superbowl???
